Grant Road School Open House and BBQ

Tomorrow, September 25, is the Grant Road School Open House and BBQ.  This is a relaxed event where we welcome you to come see where your child spends their day.  Our classroom will be open from 5:30pm-6:30pm for you to come look around.  The BBQ runs until 7pm.

Mrs. Eckert and I look forward to meeting many of you tomorrow night!

Zones of Regulation

In our class, and throughout the school, we are talking about the Zones of Regulation - blue, green, yellow and red.  This is a framework used to teach students self-regulation.  The system helps students categorize, recognize and identify the complex feelings and states students experience.  It also allows students to tap into strategies or tools to help them move between zones.  The goal is to be in the green zone when we are in the classroom - calm, happy and ready to learn.  :)

Today we watched a few clips from the different zones.  I encourage you to watch these with your child and chat with them about the zones.  (I have not previewed every clip, so please use your own discretion.)

Stress Relief

Last Friday we had a special visit from our English as an Additional Language (EAL) teacher who lead us in some stress relief activities outside in the bowl.  First she taught us how to do deep breathing...4 counts in through your nose, hold for 4 counts and out through your mouth for 8 counts (4, 4, 8).  Next we pretended we were trees.  Even when the wind blew, we stood strong with our roots in the earth.  Last, we had the opportunity to make salt satchels to use in a bath or foot soak.  Salt is known to draw negativity out of our body.  We had fun learning new ways to relieve stress!

How to Make a Salt Satchel
Take a square piece of cloth 30cmx30cm.

Put 1/4 cup of Epsom salts in the centre.

We added lavender clippings and rose petals.  You could add any herbs and flowers you enjoy and have around.

Pull up the corners of the cloth and tie it with a ribbon.

Drop in warm water and get ready to relax!

Teamwork

All week we have been talking about what it means to be part of a team - in sports, at home and in the classroom.

Together we have decided we want to be a Grade 3 Team that:
has fun together,
is kind and honest,
works together,
plays with heart,
believes in each other, and
tries our best!

These will be our guiding principles as we work on our Circle of Courage goal of BELONGING.

We watched the Sara Bareilles video, 'Brave', today and discussed being brave to try even when things are hard - writing, math, standing up for others, etc.  Here it is:
